Indications

Naftidrofuryl Oxalate is used in the treatment of peripheral vascular disorders, which involve poor blood circulation outside the brain and heart. It is indicated for the relief of:

  • Intermittent claudication
  • Night-time leg cramps
  • Severe rest pain in the legs
  • Pale or bluish fingers or toes, worsened by cold exposure
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning sensations in fingers or toes (Raynaud’s syndrome or acrocyanosis)
  • Trophic ulcers of the legs or feet
  • Diabetic peripheral vascular disease (diabetic arteriopathy)
  • Gangrene associated with poor circulation
Pharmacology

Naftidrofuryl Oxalate has 5-HT2 receptor blocking activity and counteracts serotonin-induced vasoconstriction and platelet aggregation. It also acts directly on cellular metabolism by increasing ATP levels, reducing lactic acid accumulation in ischemic tissues, and enhancing cellular oxidative capacity. In addition, it possesses strong spasmolytic properties, helping to relieve vascular spasms.

Dosage Administration

One or two Naftidrofuryl oxalate capsules three times daily during meals for a minimum of three months or at the discretion of the physician.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Naftidrofuryl Oxalate or any of its excipients. Patients with a history of hyperoxaluria or recurrent calcium-containing kidney stones should not use this medicine.

Side Effects
  • Gastrointestinal (uncommon): diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain
  • Renal and urinary (very rare): calcium oxalate kidney stones
  • Skin (uncommon): skin rash
  • Hepatobiliary (rare): liver damage
Pregnancy & Lactation

Due to lack of sufficient clinical data, Naftidrofuryl Oxalate is not recommended during pregnancy. It should also be avoided during breastfeeding as its excretion in human milk is not established.

Precautions & Warnings

Naftidrofuryl Oxalate may alter urine composition and promote calcium oxalate kidney stone formation. Taking the medicine without sufficient water, especially before bedtime, may cause esophageal irritation. Always take with adequate water. Cases of liver damage have been reported.

Overdose Effects

Overdose may lead to depression of cardiac conduction and convulsions. Medical attention is required immediately.
