Bimatoprost ophthalmic solution is used to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) in adult patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension who do not respond adequately to topical beta-blockers or prostaglandin analogues.
Bimatoprost
Generic MedicinePharmacology
Bimatoprost is a synthetic prostamide analogue with strong ocular hypotensive effects. It acts by mimicking naturally occurring prostamides and lowers intraocular pressure by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor through both trabecular meshwork and uveoscleral pathways. Timolol Maleate is a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor blocker that reduces the production of aqueous humor in the eye. It does not possess significant intrinsic sympathomimetic, myocardial depressant, or local anesthetic (membrane stabilizing) activity.
Dosage Administration
The recommended dose is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily, either in the morning or in the evening. Use at the same time each day.
Interactions
No clinically significant drug interactions have been identified or well established.
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its components. It should also not be used in patients with bronchospasm, bronchial asthma, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), sinus bradycardia, sick sinus syndrome, sinoatrial block, second or third-degree atrioventricular block, overt cardiac failure, or cardiogenic shock.
Side Effects
No specific adverse drug reactions have been identified exclusively for the combination of Bimatoprost and Timolol in clinical studies. Most reported adverse effects are mild and similar to those observed with either drug alone, including conjunctival hyperemia, eye itching, burning sensation, foreign body sensation, eyelid redness, eye pain, sensitivity to light, eye irritation, eyelid swelling, increased tearing, and eyelash growth.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Therefore, Bimatoprost should be used during pregnancy only if clearly necessary.
Lactation: There is no information on the excretion of Bimatoprost into human milk or its effects on infants. However, Timolol is known to be excreted in human milk and may cause adverse effects in breastfed infants. Therefore, use during breastfeeding is not recommended.
Precautions & Warnings
Caution is advised in patients with severe or uncontrolled cardiovascular disease. Patients with a history of serious heart disease should be monitored for signs of cardiac failure and changes in pulse rate. Use with caution in patients with active intraocular inflammation or corneal disorders.
