Naphazoline + Zinc Sulfate

Zinc sulphate provides zinc ions which exert an astringent effect, helping to tighten tissues and offering mild antiseptic action. Naphazoline acts as a vasoconstrictor, reducing redness, inflammation, and swelling of the conjunctiva. It is a benzylimidazoline derivative that works by directly stimulating α-adrenergic receptors on the smooth muscle of blood vessels, leading to vessel constriction.
Dosage Administration
Adults: 1 drop in the conjunctival sac, three to 4 times per day.
Children: Naphazoline nitrate and Zinc sulphate drops has not been studied in children. Generally, in children the dosage of vasoconstrictors should be low and selected with caution
Interactions
Naphazoline-containing products should not be used during treatment with MAO inhibitors or within 10 days after stopping such therapy. The effects of Naphazoline may be enhanced when used together with tricyclic antidepressants.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to zinc sulphate, Naphazoline, or any of the formulation ingredients. Contraindicated in narrow-angle glaucoma, dry eye conditions, especially keratoconjunctivitis sicca (Sjogren’s syndrome). Not recommended for use in infants.
Side Effects
May cause mydriasis and a slight increase in intraocular pressure in rare cases. A mild, temporary burning sensation may occur after instillation, which does not affect treatment outcome. Prolonged use may lead to rebound redness of the eye. In very rare cases, systemic cardiovascular effects such as hypertension and arrhythmia may occur. Nonspecific fatigue has also been reported in some patients.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy: No controlled studies are available in animals or pregnant women.
Use during lactation: The safety of Naphazoline & Zinc during breastfeeding has not been established.
Precautions & Warnings
Avoid prolonged and unsupervised use of Naphazoline & Zinc. If no improvement is seen within 2 days, treatment should be stopped and alternative therapy considered. If eye discomfort or visual disturbance occurs, discontinue use immediately. Use with caution in patients with predisposition to glaucoma and in those with hypertension, cardiovascular disease, pheochromocytoma, aneurysm, hyperglycemia, and hyperthyroidism.
