Oxymetazoline is an alpha-1A adrenoceptor agonist. It produces its effect primarily through vasoconstriction of blood vessels, which helps reduce redness of the skin.
Dosage Administration
For topical use only, it is not for oral, ophthalmic or intravaginal use. Apply a little amount of the cream, once daily in a thin layer to cover the entire face (forehead, nose, each cheek and chin) avoiding eyes and lips. Wash hands immediately after applying the cream.
Side Effects
The most common side effects include application site dermatitis, worsening of inflammatory rosacea lesions, application site pruritus, application site erythema, and application site pain.
Pregnancy & Lactation
The safety of oxymetazoline during pregnancy and lactation has not been established; however, its use during this period is not considered to pose a known hazard.
Precautions & Warnings
Alpha-adrenergic agonists may affect blood pressure. Patients with cardiovascular disease, orthostatic hypotension, uncontrolled hypertension or hypotension should seek medical advice if their condition worsens. Use with caution in patients with cerebral or coronary insufficiency, Raynaud’s phenomenon, thromboangiitis obliterans, scleroderma, or Sjögren’s syndrome. Patients should seek medical care if signs of worsening vascular insufficiency develop. Immediate medical attention is required if symptoms of acute narrow-angle glaucoma occur.
Overdose Effects
Oxymetazoline is not intended for oral use. If accidental ingestion occurs, medical advice should be sought immediately. The patient should be closely monitored and supportive treatment provided as required.
