This combination capsule is used for the treatment and prevention of iron, folic acid, and zinc deficiencies, particularly during pregnancy and lactation.
Carbonyl Iron + Folic Acid + Zinc Sulfate
Generic MedicineComposition
Each capsule contains elemental iron 50 mg (as carbonyl iron INN), folic acid BP 500 micrograms, and zinc sulphate monohydrate USP 61.80 mg (equivalent to 22.50 mg zinc).
Pharmacology
This is a sustained-release formulation combining carbonyl iron, folic acid, and zinc sulphate monohydrate. It provides carbonyl iron with a high iron content (not less than 98%), ensuring high bioavailability and low toxicity, making it a safe and effective option for iron supplementation.
Dosage Administration
Adult: One Capsule daily before food or as directed by the physician.
Interactions
Carbonyl iron may reduce the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics, levodopa, levothyroxine, methyldopa, and penicillamine. Folic acid may interact with antiepileptic drugs, potentially lowering plasma levels of phenobarbital, phenytoin, and primidone.
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its components or in those with iron overload conditions.
Side Effects
Gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, constipation, and diarrhea may occur. Some patients may notice dark-colored stools. The formulation includes carbonyl iron pellets to minimize gastric irritation, and allergic reactions are rare.
Pregnancy & Lactation
The use of medication during the first trimester of pregnancy should be avoided unless clearly necessary. Iron supplementation in early pregnancy should only be given when iron deficiency is confirmed. Preventive supplementation with iron, folic acid, and zinc may be appropriate during the later stages of pregnancy, especially in cases of inadequate dietary intake.
Precautions & Warnings
Caution is advised in patients with iron overload conditions such as hemochromatosis, hemolytic anemia, or red blood cell aplasia. If there is no response to treatment, further investigation is necessary to identify other causes of anemia. In patients with renal impairment, there may be a risk of zinc accumulation.
Overdose Effects
Symptoms of overdose may include fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, tarry stools, weakness, rapid pulse, fever, coma, and seizures.
