Pharmacology

Chloroxylenol, a phenolic antiseptic, acts by binding its hydroxyl (-OH) groups to proteins present in the bacterial cell membrane. This interaction disrupts the membrane, causing leakage of cellular contents. As a result, the compound penetrates the bacterial cell and binds further with intracellular proteins and enzymes, impairing normal cellular activity. At higher concentrations, it causes coagulation of proteins and nucleic acids within the bacteria, ultimately leading to rapid cell death.
