Desloratadine is used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and year-round allergic rhinitis, including sneezing, runny nose, nasal itching, congestion, itchy or watery eyes, redness, itching of the palate, and coughing. It is also indicated for the treatment of chronic idiopathic urticaria, helping to reduce itching as well as the size and number of hives.

Desloratadine, the primary active metabolite of Loratadine, is a long-acting, non-sedating tricyclic antihistamine with selective H1-receptor antagonist activity. It also helps inhibit the release of histamine from human mast cells.
Dosage Administration
Pediatric drops:
- Child 6-11 months of age: 2 ml drops once daily.
- Child 1-2 years of age: 2.5 ml drops once daily.
Syrup:
- Child 6-11 months of age: 2 ml once daily.
- Child 1-5 years of age: 2.5 ml once daily.
- Child 6-11 years of age: 5 ml once daily.
- Adults & >12 years of age: 10 ml once daily.
Tablet: Adults and children 12 years of age and over: 1 tablet daily

Contraindications
Desloratadine is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to this medication, any of its components, or to Loratadine.
Side Effects
Less common adverse effects may include headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, pharyngitis, dyspepsia, and myalgia.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. The safety of Desloratadine during pregnancy has not been established; therefore, it should be used during pregnancy only if clearly indicated. Desloratadine is excreted in breast milk, so a decision should be made to either discontinue nursing or discontinue the medication, considering the importance of treatment to the mother.
Precautions & Warnings
In adult patients with hepatic or renal impairment, a starting dose of one 5 mg tablet every other day is recommended based on pharmacokinetic data. Caution is advised in patients with a personal or family history of seizures.
