Sodium Bicarbonate [Ear Preparations]
Generic MedicinePharmacology
Ear wax that commonly obstructs the external auditory canal contains less than 50% fatty material derived from sebaceous and ceruminous gland secretions. The remaining portion consists of desquamated epithelial cells, foreign particles, and shed hairs. This non-fatty material forms a matrix that binds fatty components together, forming the ceruminous mass. While oils or solvents may bind this mass more firmly, aqueous solutions that penetrate the matrix can break it down. Sodium Bicarbonate ear drops dissolve wax by penetrating the dry matrix of the ceruminous mass, breaking it down into semi-solid debris. This provides a faster and more effective method for ear wax removal.
