Indications

Benzydamine Hydrochloride mouthwash is indicated for the relief of pain and inflammation in various conditions affecting the mouth and throat, including:

  • Sore throat
  • Painful tongue or gums
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Discomfort associated with dentures
  • Pain following dental procedures or surgery
Composition

Each ml of mouthwash contains: Benzydamine Hydrochloride — 1.5 mg (w/v)

Pharmacology

Benzydamine Hydrochloride mouthwash is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with analgesic and local anesthetic properties. It is minimally absorbed into the bloodstream when applied topically, resulting in low systemic exposure while maintaining a high concentration at the site of application in the mouth and throat.

This ensures effective relief of oropharyngeal pain with minimal systemic side effects. Unlike conventional NSAIDs, benzydamine works by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines and reducing vascular permeability. In addition, it provides a local anesthetic effect, leading to rapid relief of pain.

Dosage Administration

15 ml of Benzydamine mouthwash should be rinsed or gargled every 1.5-3 hours or as required, for 20-30 seconds. If stinging occurs, it can be diluted with an equal volume of water.

Pediatric Use: It is not indicated below 12 years of age

Contraindications

This preparation should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to benzydamine or any of the components of the mouthwash. Avoid contact with the eyes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse immediately with plenty of cold water.

Side Effects

Benzydamine Hydrochloride mouthwash may cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Most side effects are mild.

  • Severe allergic reactions (rare): May include red, raised skin rash, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, mouth, lips, or eyelids, fever, and feeling faint. If swelling involves the throat causing difficulty in breathing or swallowing, immediate hospitalization is required.
  • Itchy rash: Sometimes accompanied by pale, raised patches with red borders (urticaria).
  • Oral numbness: A sensation of numbness in the mouth.
  • Burning or stinging sensation: If this occurs, the mouthwash may be diluted with water to reduce discomfort.
